BioShock 2 “Big Sisters” Modeled on Ken Levine’s Big Sister

Despite reports that Ken Levine was taking a backseat role as a consulting producer on BioShock 2, Hardcasual.net can exclusively report that Mr. Levine was instrumental in the design and creation of the “Big Sisters” – as they were modeled directly on his own big sister, Julie Levine.
After GameInformer released the image of their April cover, revealing the slimmer “Big Sister” for the first time, Hardcasual.net contacted Mr. Levine, who spoke to us exclusively about his big sister and the role she played in his development of this new baddie.
HARDCASUAL: Thank you for speaking to us. Now, are we to understand that this character, this “Big Sister”, is based entirely on your sister Julie?
LEVINE: Well, not entirely. Where the BioShock Big Sister wears a suit of rough-hewn steampunk armor, assembled from the wreckage of the underwater city of Rapture, my sister Julie mainly wears a thick layer of foundation to hide her acne and a push-up bra to try to seduce my friends.
HARDCASUAL: I see. So the similarities must be more in the way the character acts?
LEVINE: Absolutely. You see, we looked at the Big Daddies from BioShock and felt that while they were intimidating, exciting enemies, they weren’t emotionally crippling in the way my sister Julie was. So we developed this new kind of boss, which emasculates you in front of your first prom date.
HARDCASUAL: Wait — BioShock 2 is going to feature a prom?
LEVINE: I’m not going to spoil anything here, but let’s just say that where the first game was about objectivism and the role of the individual in society, this game is going to be much more about the struggles of being in your early teenage years while your sister is being a total c-word.
HARDCASUAL: That sounds like a big departure.
LEVINE: My therapist said that I should take my problems head-on. Take, for instance, the time that she convinced me that my parents had me as an accident, and that now they were just fattening me up so they can eat me. Well, let’s just say that now that we’ve integrated that… There won’t be any complaints about BioShock 2’s ending!
HARDCASUAL: You think the problem with BioShock’s ending was that it wasn’t about… Your family dynamics?
LEVINE: Roughly. Wouldn’t you agree?
HARDCASUAL: No. Not at all.
LEVINE: BioShock 2! Everywhere, November ‘09!
