Electronic Arts followed up its quarterly earnings call with a bold new product placement last night at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, where a creature crafted in Spore performed with Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne and T.I. The creature was an almost lifelike approximation of a living, breathing musician, despite being assembled entirely with Spore Creature Creator textures and shapes.

Spore Designer Will Wright said of the creation, “We know that Spore is a product that will last in the eyes of both gamers and a wider public, but not enough of the ‘casual’ marketplace has picked it up just yet. So, to show just how much you can do with the Creature Creation features, we created a digital being clearly impossible in nature, and unleashed it on the Grammys stage for all to see.”

Rapper Kanye West, who performed with the creature, said on his blog, “DID U SEE THAT SH!T @ THE GRAMMYS?!?! SPORE WAS IN THE BUILDING!” Lil Wayne, another guest performer, is believed to have written the whole thing off as a bizarre Sizzurp-induced hallucination.

Music producer Diplo, who is widely understood to have created the creature from scratch, has since seen the creature slip mostly out of his grasp. When asked what he thought of the creature’s performance, he was quoted as saying, “Well, it could be worse. It could have just been one of the 5000 penis creatures.”
